Restaurant news: First local Dishcrawl restaurant tour planned for March 5

Also, Wine and Canvas hosts painting events at local restaurants

Are you foodies looking for a new experience? Do you know anything about Dishcrawl? Let me explain.

I've seen it described as a “social dining movement.” Dishcrawl has “ambassadors” in various cities who organize food events.

Hana Hawash is Fort Wayne's Dishcrawl ambassador, and she is planning the first local event for 7 p.m. March 5. The group will meet at a downtown restaurant, will spend 35 minutes there, and then walk to three other restaurants, spending 35 minutes at each one. It's a way to discover or try four downtown eateries all in one night and socialize with other people.

Hawash says the restaurants are about a 10-minute walk apart. Right now, the restaurants are a secret, but as the date grows closer she will start leaking clues on Twitter and Facebook. Then 48 hours before the event, she will email the attendees to tell them where to start.

Wine and Canvas

Have you heard of Wine and Canvas? The business has been around about a year. Owner Deb Baxter says it's simply a painting class with cocktails, or wine, or beer, or whatever you want to drink.

Currently, she hosts the painting classes at local restaurants that have private rooms. She supplies the canvas, paints, easels, brushes, aprons and a professional artist who instructs the class on how to re-create a painting using acrylic paints.

While they paint, the class members sip on whatever they want to order from the restaurant. Baxter said some people even come early to eat before painting. The cost for most classes is $35, plus, of course, whatever you drink.

Baxter hopes to secure her own studio in Covington Plaza, where she can sell beer and wine and host events on Friday and Saturday nights, when many restaurants are too full to accommodate her classes.

She also does Cookies and Canvas classes for children but needs a place to host them; she says restaurants aren't too keen on the idea of turning loose children with paints.

Pending approval of her liquor license, she hopes to open the studio in early spring.

Wine and Canvas also does private events in homes.

New Thai, Burmese restaurant

Pad Thai, a restaurant featuring Thai and Burmese cuisine, opened a few weeks ago at 3307 E. State Blvd., just a little east of the intersection of State and Hobson Road.

The menu is mostly Thai dishes now, but Ricky Than, an employee, said the menu will be expanded to include more Burmese foods. Thai food is usually spicy, but Than said, “we'll adjust it to your taste.”

New Mexican restaurant

Los Cabos Mexican Grill has opened at 10812 Coldwater Road, just north of the Coldwater-Dupont Road intersection. Arcelia Sanchez owns the restaurant, which features Mexican food. The restaurant hopes to get its license to serve beer, wine and wine-based margaritas in March.

Hours: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday; 11 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday. Phone: 637-0515.

Wild game meal

Venison, buffalo, quail and more are on the menu at the Wild Game and Wine Tasting Dinner presented by the Anthony Wayne Rotary.

The event will raise money for the Anthony Wayne Rotary Charitable Foundation, which supports local youths through student scholarships and the Dictionary Project — distributing dictionaries to Allen County third-graders.

The meal will be prepared by Chef Jeff Bunting and Ivy Tech Community College's culinary students. It will begin at 6 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Ivy Tech campus, 3800 N. Anthony Blvd.

Dessert and wine bar fundraiser

A Dessert & Wine Bar fundraiser for TRIAAC, the Three Rivers Institute of Afrikan Art and Culture Inc., will be 7-10 p.m. Friday at the historic Lincoln National Tower Bank lobby, 116 E. Berry St. The event is “For Love of a People's History” — In Celebration of Black History Month. The evening includes live music and a silent auction.

Dinner at Downton

You wish, right? OK, it's not really dinner with the Crawleys, but this event at the Holiday Inn at IPFW, 4111 Paul Shaffer Drive, is a Dining Etiquette Dinner. At this four-course meal, Professor John Niser, chair of Consumer and Family Sciences at IPFW, will offer a look at proper dining etiquette of the past and present. ‘Moulin Rouge’

IPFW's Hospitality Management Program takes over the Mastodon Grill 5-10 p.m. Tuesday nights starting tonight for the next 10 weeks (except March 12). Senior class members of the Advanced Food Service Management course will be in charge of French-themed food and festivities.

Reservations are encouraged; call the Holiday Inn at 482-3800. IPFW staff, faculty and students get a 15 percent discount.

German buffet

Ivy Tech Community College-Northeast is serving a German buffet 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday at the coliseum campus, 3800 N. Anthony Blvd. (enter door 24). Cost: $20, cash or check only. Wine is available at an extra cost per glass. Call 480-2002 for reservations at least 24 hours in advance of the dinner.

Community Harvest fundraiser

Community Harvest Food Bank is celebrating 30 years of service at its 2013 Community Harvest Gala, beginning at 5:30 p.m. March 9 at the Hotel Fort Wayne Ballroom (formerly the Marriott), 305 E. Washington Center Road. The evening includes dinner, a signature cocktail, live and silent auctions and more. Tickets are $175 per person. Tables of eight and 10 are available for groups. Gourmet bakery Vanilla Bean, 3410 N. Anthony Blvd., will participate in the 2013 Summer Fancy Food Show in New York City, June 30-July 2. The Fancy Food Show is a networking event where retailers, restaurateurs, and distributors connect with 2,400 exhibitors to find new and innovative specialty food products.

Culinary class
