It took firefighters about 10 minutes to extinguish a house fire Sunday afternoon on the city’s northwest side.

Firefighters responded to a call about a house fire at 1932 St. Marys Avenue at 4:53 p.m., according to a written statement from the Fort Wayne Fire Department.

They arrived about five minutes later and found heavy fire and smoke coming from the rear of a two-story house near West State and Sherman boulevards.

Crews made an interior attack while searching the house for occupants, the release said.

No one was found inside the home, and the house appeared to be unoccupied.

Additional crews extinguished the exterior fire and removed siding from the rear of the house to get to the flames inside the walls. The fire was under control at 5:08 p.m., the release said.

The blaze caused moderate fire, water and smoke damage, according to the release. The cause remains under investigation.
