The Mad Ants acquired point guard Dairese Gary in a trade with the Los Angeles D-Fenders on Tuesday, giving them a strong backup for Walker Russell Jr.
Gary, a native of Elkhart, played for Concord High School and then was a college standout at New Mexico under coach Steve Alford.
The Ants sent Jarrid Famous and fourth-round draft pick Darnell Dodson to the D-Fenders.
Ants coach Duane Ticknor said he believes the 6-1 Gary can bring a lot to the team. Gary was a first-round pick for the D-Fenders in this year's draft. He averaged 14.1 points, 5.5 assists, and 3.2 rebounds as a senior at New Mexico, then suffered an ACL tear last year.
“He's an explosive scorer and he knows how to run a team,” Ticknor said. “He played in a pro system in with Alford and Noodles (Craig Neal) in New Mexico. We're excited about him.”
The Mad Ants open training camp on Sunday, with the regular season starting Nov. 23 at home against Erie.
