TV topples, seriously injuring boy, 3

A 3-year-old boy suffered serious head injuries Monday when a 32-inch television fell on him in Monroeville, police said.

The boy and his mother had just come home from shopping when the accident occurred, Monroeville Town Marshal Phil Meyer said.

The mother left the boy in the living room, and she went into the kitchen. “A minute to two minutes later, she heard a crash,” Meyer said.

The TV, along with the table it was sitting on, had fallen over, and the TV had hit the boy’s head, Meyer said.

“It was an old-style TV,” he said. “So it had a lot of weight to it.”

Meyer said no one saw what happened, but authorities assume the boy was trying to turn on the TV.

“It’s just nothing more than a pure accident,” he said.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the home in the 400 block of Monroe Street shortly before 9:30 a.m. The boy was flown by helicopter to Parkview Regional Medical Center.

The boy, who was not identified, was initially in critical condition but was upgraded to serious condition Monday afternoon, Meyer said.
