In the finale of a three-game set, the Fort Wayne TinCaps scored six runs over the first four innings and sailed to a 7-2 win on Saturday afternoon. The win gave Fort Wayne back-to-back victories for the first time in 2012, and it was also the team’s first series victory in five tries. Starter Frank Garces tossed a career-high eight innings for his first win of the year. Jace Peterson, Case McElroy, Kyle Gaedele and Donavan Tate each contributed an RBI for the TinCaps.

Five of the Fort Wayne (6-10) runs scored in the first inning against Kane County’s Jason Mitchell (0-2). With two men on, McElroy knocked home Peterson to make it 1-0. Travis Whitmore was then hit by a pitch, which loaded the bases. Duanel Jones hit a grounder back to the mound, which was fielded by Mitchell. His throw home sailed wide of catcher Edul Escobar, allowing Justin Miller and McElroy to score. Gaedele and Tate both grounded out, but runs scored as those two outs were recorded.

In the fourth, the TinCaps tacked on another run as Peterson scored on a throwing error by Kane County (8-8) third baseman Michael Antonio. The seventh Fort Wayne run crossed the plate on a Peterson double in the ninth.

The two Cougars runs scored on a two-run double by Kane County shortstop Orlando Calixte in the eighth against Garces (1-1). Johnny Barbato pitched a perfect ninth for Fort Wayne. The eight innings of work for Garces were not only a career high, but also the most that a TinCaps starter has thrown this season.

On Sunday the TinCaps begin a three-game series with the Clinton LumberKings. Adys Portillo is scheduled to start for Fort Wayne. Clinton’s scheduled starting pitcher is Stephen Landazuri. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 eastern time.
